STARBASE MCAS Beaufort is a congressionally funded program designed to offer children
in the military and local community a unique and exciting opportunity through a
hands-on program emphasizing math, science, and technology.
Hosted by the Marine
Corps Air Station (MCAS) Beaufort, this program introduces 4th through 6th grade
students to the wonders of aviation, while stressing goal-setting and healthy lifestyles.
Currently there are 44 STARBASE Academies across the country, but STARBASE MCAS
Beaufort is the first for South Carolina and for the Marine Corps.
During its first year of operation STARBASE MCAS Beaufort accomplished goals that
it would normally take three to five years to reach. The partnerships the program
developed continue to strengthen the military and local community ties, as well
as connect Beaufort with corporations and foundations in the local and regional
area. Although the program is funded at the DoD level, it is administered at the
local level to better make use of the local qualities that make South Carolina and
the Lowcountry unique.
